nfortunately,
most people come to APH in life crises when they are at wits' end with no idea
where to go next. Often guided by a caring friend or serendipitous happening,
they stumble upon APH, confused and lost, feeling misunderstood or unheard by
their current care-givers. Not only lacking the clear answers they seek to satisfy
their needs, sometimes they don't even have a "voice" left to ask clear questions.
They come with all kinds of conditions from AIDS to Xenophobia, each person just
wanting to feel better.
A Sister's Experience
\I remember when my sister Linda called me from Florida suffering
from the mental fog, dread, and exhaustion of a flare-up of
her Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS). She had been to all the
right doctors who were supposed to know but kept running into
what felt like brick walls. Nothing was helping and some "remedies"
were hurting. She felt ashamed to share her struggles with me
because she often was made to feel "it was all in her head."
She only shared her crises with me when she was so twisted in
pain, anxiety and confusion that her doctor wanted to put her
on Haldol (a fairly heavy anti-psychotic medication). The scope
of this site was inspired by my experience helping my sister
in Florida from my home in New York. As someone who has a great
deal of experience with confusing illnesses and healing, I really
wanted to help. I know about the body's own magical and mysterious
healing capacities firsthand.
A Brother's Hope
I asked her if she knew of any kind of body/mind/spirit facilitators in her area. She said she didn't and I promised to make phone calls trusting that there were people doing this kind of work (in different styles with different names) everywhere. In a total of five serendipitous phone calls, we found a center for craniosacral therapy right in her back yard and they were very familiar with CFS. She immediately felt heard by the practitioner and there was profound release of suffering at her first session. Her healing process began. I know that her body's inner wisdom will lead her to where ever she may need to go to complete her process. The body knows and it never lies or does dumb things. We just have to learn to listen.
Being There For You
Not everyone has a brother who has been exposed to all the information
that I have, and with so many resources at hand. Our IAPH community wants this
website to be your "brother." We want to put every resource
that our vast community knows at your fingertips. We want to be a vehicle to help
you and your relations learn about the inherent healing capacities we all possess
and the skills to reduce suffering that you can rely on in times of crisis.
One of Many Paths
There are many paths that support the journey of transformation from suffering to wholeness. I founded one such pathway, called Authentic Process Therapy or APT, out of my own healing experience. It offers especially useful frameworks for understanding the healing journey. This website provides an opportunity to update the findings in my book on Authentic Process Therapy and recovery and give the information to you through this nonprofit vehicle. Yet, APT is one of probably a thousand roads where riches can be found along the journey.
The Path
We Share
We share with you the many modalities we are presently familiar
with, in hopes that, like my sister Linda, you can find your
starting point in an accessible way. The approaches and techniques
we have discovered will be listed throughout the website and
on the geographical map. We will include the local facilitators
we are aware of and add to the list as we learn more. If you
can't find a resource, check back or email us. Advise us if
you want to recommend one. We will add resources only after
making responsible inquiry
It is our hope that as more people learn about theinstitute.org website, they may be able to access help before they are in crises. It is our desire that these healing practices become integrated into mainstream healthcare in quick order. This will be an enormous shift. It will take educated consumers to make this happen. I believe we are up to the task. As we realize that the Internet is the first conscious expression of a global brain and resourceful network we will be startled by how quickly positive change can occur.
APH Connects With Mainstream Healthcare
How does APH connect with mainstream health care? There is much room to grow. Unfortunately, with the exception of a few progressive institutions, the burden for locating alternative and interrelated modalities is upon the sick and the suffering--the last place it should be. As the potential of the Internet to serve as a unifying global mind gradually increases, the status-quo will change for everyone's benefit. It is already occurring. If you engage in authentic, healing modalities and find benefit, tell your mainstream practitioner. Be specific about how your suffering was reduced even if it seems mysterious. Refer him or her to this website or to your facilitating healer for more information. As we join together to heal ourselves we will also be healing the world's ailing health care systems.
